MEET YOUR SURGEON: DAGNY ZHU, M.D.
Dr. Zhu was born in Shanghai, China and immigrated to the United States with her working-class parents at the age of 3. As a Southern California native, Dr. Zhu graduated top of her high school class as valedictorian and attended UCLA on a full-tuition Regents scholarship (the highest award granted in the UC system) where she graduated Summa Cum Laude with a degree in molecular, cell, and developmental biology.
Dr. Zhu received her M.D. from Harvard Medical School where she discovered her love for ophthalmology and performed cutting-edge research on corneal immunology at Harvard’s Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary. As a medical student, she co-founded the Medical Mandarin course for doctors-in-training and embarked on a medical mission with Operation Burns in Mumbai, India where she worked alongside plastic surgeons to treat burn victims with debilitating skin and eyelid contractures. Dr. Zhu then returned to Southern California to complete her ophthalmology residency at the prestigious Doheny Eye Institute/University of Southern California (USC) & Los Angeles County Medical Center, where she served a predominantly Latino community and cared for the sickest patients at one of the largest public hospitals in the country. Described as a “gifted surgeon” by her mentors, Dr. Zhu elected to complete fellowship training in cornea and refractive surgery at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, the #1 eye hospital in the world.
Dr. Zhu now serves as Medical Director and Partner of NVISION Eye Centers in her hometown of Rowland Heights, CA. She also holds a clinical faculty appointment at the Western University School of Osteopathic Medicine. In addition, Dr. Zhu sits on the editorial board of major ophthalmology publications and holds leadership positions in the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery. She is also an inductee of the prestigious World College of Refractive Surgery & Visual Sciences, AECOS, and Cedars Aspens societies.
As a key opinion leader in advanced laser vision correction, cataract, and custom lens replacement surgery, Dr. Zhu educates surgeons from around the world on the latest surgical procedures and serves as medical advisor to multiple ophthalmic companies. She leads FDA clinical research trials on the latest advancements in cataract, refractive, presbyopia, and keratoconus treatments. Dr. Zhu has delivered and been featured in over 300 lectures, scientific presentations, publications, and press articles including Forbes, the Today Show, InStyle, and CNN.
In addition to laser vision correction and cataract surgery, Dr. Zhu performs all surgeries of the anterior segment including Implantable Contact Lens (ICL), corneal transplantation, cross-linking and INTACS for keratoconus, and pterygiumsurgery. She has published numerous scientific journal articles and book chapters on advanced corneal transplantation techniques, infectious keratitis, femtosecond laser, and presbyopia-correcting lens technologies.
In addition to her professional and academic achievements, Dr. Zhu has garnered a large social media following as a Healio podcast co-host and healthcare influencer (@DZEyeMD with over 100k+ followers) where she educates on eye health, champions for women in medicine, and provides mentorship to the next generation.

Fluent in Chinese (Mandarin and Shanghainese) and Spanish, Dr. Zhu is proud to serve her hometown and neighboring communities in Los Angeles, Orange County, San Bernardino, Inland Empire, and beyond. In her spare time, she enjoys playing classical piano, acrylic painting, and singing karaoke as well as spending time with her family as mom to son, Atlas.
