How to Beat Dry Eye This Winter

Happy Sunday!! I’m livestreaming the Oscars today and resting up for my 6-day workweek ☺️. I love bundling up on the couch because it has been a record cold with SNOW ❄️ in SoCal! That also means I’ve been hearing a lot of complaints from my patients regarding eye burning, Read more…

[WWW👩🏻‍⚕️- What does it cost to run a [WWW👩🏻‍⚕️- What does it cost to run a cataract and laser refractive practice with surgical suite?]

✅ Lasers- $100k+ each (We have 3).
✅ Operating microscope- $100k+
✅ Cataract phacoemulsification machine- $100k+
✅ Imaging and other devices- $100k+
✅ 💯 sheer determination- Priceless.

And then there’s the bulk of monthly expenses like payroll, rent, marketing, click fees, meds/supplies, etc.

Providing the best care and outcomes with the latest advanced technologies all under one roof is not cheap.

But our patients are worth it.

The barriers to running a tech-heavy practice are high, especially for women who comprise only 8% of refractive surgeons in the U.S.

These past few weeks, I’ve been starstruck co-paneling webinars and podcasts with trailblazing women leaders in cataract and refractive surgery who have built hugely successful private practices (including large multi-center, multi-speciality groups) and assumed leadership positions in industry and national societies (swipe 👉🏻 to see a few @womeninophthalmology ).

They make me feel like...𝙔𝙚𝙨, 𝙬𝙚 𝙘𝙖𝙣 𝙙𝙤 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙨. 💪🏻.

With increasing financial freedom for women and the evolution of gender roles, I’m confident that you’ll be seeing more women-run LASIK practices in your neighborhood.

For now, I’m proud to be part of the elite 8% to serve your vision needs 🤓. #yesshecan #womeninophthalmology #womeninmedicine #lasiksurgeon #cataractsurgeon #privatepractice
When I saw the scab on my mom’s face last week ( When I saw the scab on my mom’s face last week (👉🏻), the only thing that immediately came to mind was, “WHO ATTACKED YOU?!”

She had to tell me multiple times that she simply tripped and fell at the park for me to believe her.

It happened the same day a 65-year old Filipina woman was assaulted while walking to church. She was told that she “didn’t belong here” and was kicked and stomped in the head, while security guards in the neighboring building looked on and closed the door.

That’s the kind of world we live in today.

My mom left her family in Shanghai to come to America for a better life in 1989.

In China, she was a university statistics lecturer.

In America, she cleaned motel bathrooms and waitressed Chinese restaurants as a single mom.

People talked down to her everyday, but she persevered. She learned English by taking adult school classes at night. She got a bookkeeping job by asking to start at the lowest pay. She saved her money, invested in 401Ks, 529 plan, eventually became a homeowner, citizen of the United States, and put her daughter through college and medical school (thank God for scholarships and financial aid).

My mom embodies the American spirit more than anyone I know. She has faced unspeakable challenges, but I’ve never feared for her safety like I do today.

The America that I know is better than this.
We deserve better than this.
This is our home.
We’re here to stay. #weareamerican #thisisourhome #stopasianhate #stopaapihate #hateisavirus #asianamerican

Can doctor parents have a demanding career and st Can doctor parents have a demanding career and still enjoy family time together?

YES! Both hubby @the_hills_orthodontics and I own our own practices and work Saturdays, but our Sunday suppers are protected family time. And sometimes that means baby and grandma join for “romantic” special occasions.

This past Sunday, we took @baby.attie to the @griffithobservatory for an anniversary dinner stroll to reminisce our first wedding dance, which was based off the movie, La La Land!

The hardest part about your baby third-wheeling your anniversary dinner?

Figuring out how to match outfits 3-ways 😅.

Hubby and I used to be super nerds who matched a lot (swipe 👉🏻). Most of the time, it was actually a coincidence because he just happened to have so much pink...I mean SALMON in his closet 😏.

So here’s a Happy Doctors’ Day to all my lovely doctors out there balancing life, love, and medicine everyday! Underneath the whitecoat, we are all regular people with real lives and salmon shirts👚(But for real tho, it’s pink right? 🤣) #pinknotsalmon #familytime #familyiseverything

Do you know the next line? 🙂
Happy Anniversary to my best friend.

[WWW👩🏻‍⚕️ - How to be a GREAT presente [WWW👩🏻‍⚕️ - How to be a GREAT presenter in a virtual setting] Who misses giving talks in person, face-to-face interviews, and just live human interaction in general? 🙋🏻‍♀️ As an introvert, I always thought that speaking through a webcam would be easier and less nerve-wracking, but it actually comes with its own set of challenges.

Recently, I had the honor of participating in a series of live webinars alongside some world-renowned 👁 surgeons @ikeahmed @johnberdahl @cmccabe1313 @abrissettemd (👉🏻 swipe). Seeing these seasoned experts in action, it’s clear that there’s a set of fundamental principles that all great speakers adhere to. Here are 7 tips that have helped me up my speaking game👇🏻(adapted from Grit Productions):

1️⃣ Know what the first words out your mouth will be - This helps you avoid “ums,” lingering, and repeating things that have already been said.
2️⃣ State. Support. Summarize - Attention spans are short. State your main points upfront as an outline (1, 2, & 3). Then support each point with evidence and summarize your conclusion.
3️⃣ Stop when you have nothing meaningful to add - This will help prevent you from rambling on & on, something I’m definitely guilty of!
4️⃣ Slow down – Pause and pace yourself. The more nervous you are, the faster you talk!
5️⃣ Keep your energy up – Engage your audience by varying your speed, volume, and pitch. And remember to SMILE! 😃
6️⃣ Adopt “presenter posture” – In a virtual setting, everyone has a seat directly in front of you. ✅Pro tip: To convey confidence and avoid unnecessary movement, shift your sitting position to the front of your chair and put your feet flat on the floor about shoulder-width apart. Then lean forward slightly.
7️⃣ Look at your camera, not at the notes on your screen – It will give the appearance of eye contact to those viewing. ✅Pro tip: Shrink your video window and move it to the top of your screen so that you minimize eye movement away from the camera.

And that’s it! As a young female physician, I’m still working on exuding more confidence when I speak. How about you? Any other tips you find helpful? Let’s keep growing together ❤️. #whitecoatwisdomwednesday #virtualspeaker
Cop said shooter was “having a bad day.” No. T Cop said shooter was “having a bad day.” No. The only ones having a bad day were the victims and their families. Since when did we make excuses for mass murderers?

Shooter said his crime wasn’t racially-motivated. It was a sexual “temptation” he wanted to eliminate. Temptation as in...Asian women at Asian spas.

Asian Americans have been used as:

1️⃣ Model minorities to oppress other communities.
2️⃣ Scapegoats to blame for a pandemic.
3️⃣ And now sexual temptations to minimize a heinous crime.

Stop distorting the narrative and call it what it is—a racially-motivated HATE crime. When will this stop? #stopaapihate #hateisavirus #atlantashooting #asianamerican
Every year during match week, I remember how I mat Every year during match week, I remember how I matched into my dream residency program thanks to a computer glitch.

Almost half an hour after the deadline passed, I switched my #1 and #2 rankings because of a last-minute change of heart. I couldn’t believe it. I called IT to confirm the change.

It stuck.

I’m a strong believer in fate. Whether you matched at your #1, #2, or #20, it’s where you were meant to be. Even to those who didn’t match this time around. This is not the end.

You will grow and come out stronger than you ever thought possible. Because persevering and succeeding when all hope seems lost makes you a FIGHTER, and we need more physicians like you ❤️.

My heart has been BURSTING with pride and celebration for those who matched this week, many of whom overcame countless obstacles. See my stories for some amazing match posts this week and let me know if you have a story to share. We could all use a little inspiration💫#whitecoatwisdomwednesday #matchday2021
